When I was in high school, there were no college advisors, test prep experts, or coaches to help me. Other than my guidance counselor at school, and my private cello teacher, my parents and I were on our own to figure out where and how to apply. I think I applied to four schools, and that was considered a lot!
The SAT was and still is an exam that shows you are able to engage in critical thinking, reading comprehension, and that you have some math and writing skills. It was offered only twice per year, and some people only took it only once. The ACT was not used widely and was more a measure of what you already knew. I had to take it for only one college I was interested in, and had no time to repeat the test in order to raise my score. It was very much an afterthought and I remember feeling disappointed in my score.
As now, my interest was music. As a music major who wanted a university education, I was far more interested in my readiness to audition than I was in academics. In the mid-1970s, things were less complicated than they are in today’s world. In over 35 years of teaching experience, I have seen so many changes and have witnessed the ratcheting up of expectations and definitions of college readiness, both as a parent to now-grown children, and as a studio music teacher preparing students for auditions as majors and non-majors. I have been honored to help my students and their parents navigate an ever-changing landscape, and gain admission and scholarships to some very fine colleges, universities, and conservatories.
Now that college costs are escalating, application numbers are rising, and college admission policies are in a state of enormous change, it has never been more important for the college-bound music student to have excellent guidance with a deep personal connection and trust in their advisor. I want to be the advisor who helps you through the process! DM or email me for information about my program! I’m so excited to offer this new program which is already gathering momentum and attention! AIM HIGH!!
